Happy Sunday!<br />
<br />
On Friday, I talked about my love for dark coffee and Cafe Americano on my post HERE. I visited two more shops for my daily coffee and wanted to share the photos with you today. While La Brulerie St Roch was a cozy shop with exposed brick walls and a splash of burnt orange on walls framed with dark wood, the next shop was simple... but oh so beautiful!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.paillard.ca/en">Paillard</a> was such a large
beautiful shop (did I say that this shop was beautifully simple yet?), with high ceiling, white decor with beautiful moulding
and accents of black and red. You can't really see from my photos but
while there were tiny round tables in the front, there were large picnic
table style seatings all across the back. There were pastry sections in
the front, gelato section on the other side of the front, and food and
coffee at the back. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I came home and realized that I didn't take a picture
of my Americano and cheese bagel I had :( The coffee was too watered
down for me, as I do like it strong... but it was still good... and I
was too busy looking at this beautiful spacious shop anyway.<br />
<br />
On our last day we explored and walked all the way across the <a href="http://www.ccbn-nbc.gc.ca/_en/index.php">Battlefields Park </a>finishing our walk at the <a href="http://www.mnba.qc.ca/Home.aspx">Musee National des Beaux Arts du Quebec</a>
which took us over 2 hr. Trying to find our way home... we walked on
Avenue Cartier and saw this sign outside. SOLD! We were in :) <br />

<a href="http://www.picardiedelices.com/">Picardie</a> was such a cute little shop, and most importantly I thought their logo of red riding hood was adorable! <br />

<br />
One thing I noticed about Quebec City was that there were so many bees... inside and outside of the shops. The only people minding those little things flying around seemed to be just us... I saw a bee fly out of one of the croissant baskets at Picardie... Either way, my Americano was EXCELLENT. Dark and creamy, and Nick seemed like like his bowl of cappuccino as well :)<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading about my love for drinking coffee today :)<br />
Have a wonderful Sunday.<br />

<br />
Last month, in September, Nick and I had a chance to make a trip to Quebec City for a weekend. Initially we planned to make it a road trip to stop by the Thousand Islands ON on our way to Quebec City and then drive to Mont-Tremblant QC, but we decided to keep this trip simple and stayed in Quebec City for the entire weekend.<br />
<br />
I've been to the Old Quebec City as a field trip in Jr. Highschool days, but sadly enough, I didn't remember much except the cobble stones. So we did what we needed, and that was a simple 2 hr walking tour of the Old Quebec City from <a href="http://www.toursvoirquebec.com/en/old-quebec-tours/the-grand-tour">HERE</a>. With our "passionate" french tour guide who made it clear that she was pro-Quebec independence, we walked for almost 2.5 hr and it was well worth our time and money. I won't be discussing about the history on this post but if you're interested in reading about the history of Quebec City, there's a short summary <a href="http://www.quebecheritage.com/en/historique.html">HERE</a> and <a href="http://archives.cbc.ca/society/celebrations/topics/3512/">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
As a coffee lover (coffee pumps me up and gets me through the harsh days...), I tried to look for different coffee shop/pastry shop/boulangerie in Quebec City to try out.<br />
<br />
Here are some photos taken from the lovely shops that helped me charge up for the day:<br />

<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.brulerie-st-roch.com/">La Brulerie </a>St Roch was conveniently located near our hotel. Even though I drink my coffee black most of the time and enjoyed it, I haven't gotten into espresso shots yet. At special (or new) places, I like to try Americano... look at that fluffy foam :) That's my Americano!<br />
<br />
<br />
So what exactly is Americano? I knew that Americano is made with a shot or two of espresso with addition of hot water, but I wanted to find out a bit more about it. I've been enjoying the drinking part.. and now I'm interested in WHY!<br />
<br />
According to my sources <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caff%C3%A8_Americano">here</a> and <a href="http://espressocoffees.co.uk/">here</a>, <span id="goog_349982128"></span><span id="goog_349982129"></span>the name Americano originated from World War II, when American soldiers in Europe added hot water to espresso to enjoy their coffee in their accustomed style (drip coffee). Americano refers to hot water being added TO the extracted espresso. When the extracted espresso is added TO hot water, it's actually called Long Black! Apparently people who like their foam (crema) undisturbed they would order Long Black. You can still get Americano with proper foam on top by pouring the hot water into the extracted coffee VERY CAREFULLY... like mine :) I've noticed that there really isn't a standard proportion of espresso to hot water and different places will serve it differently. In my experience, when I ask for Americano at shops when it's clearly not on their menu (but they offer espresso shots!), they put too much water. I prefer my coffee STRONG... and I had just that at these shops I've visited.<br />
<br />
Oh, and did you know that when you're buying bags of ground coffee you're actually buying stale coffee? What I mean by stale is no longer fresh. Your cup of coffee is truly "fresh" when the coffee is consumed within 5 days of roasting, 3 hr of grinding and 15 min of brewing. The first sign of stale coffee - BITTER TASTE. Surprise!!! Of course, majority of us do not own a fancy roaster... or have time to roast our own beans at home (I am guilty of this, as when I need coffee I need it NOW). I buy already roasted beans and grind them whenever I make a cup at home though. My next mission is to try roasting it at home. <br />
<br />
Anyways, we both loved our coffee at St. Roch La Brulerie and their sanwiches were great too!<br />

Of the 42 books in series, 26 were written by the Reverend and the rest were written by his son. Apparently the stories were based on real-life events and started with the Reverend’s passion for railway. The first book was published in 1945 and it was first broadcasted on the ITV british network in September 1984 as Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. I didn’t know this, but the show featured some big celebrity narrators including Ringo Starr Alec Baldwin and Pierce Brosnan! Kids do have good taste in their shows! Computer world is not my forte, and maybe everyone else knows this but me, but here it goes. Tandy Corporation was a leather goods company founded in 1919 in Texas that bought Radio Shack in the 1960s and renamed it Tandy Radio Shack. TRS-80 was born in the late 1970s and early 1980s with its first model and it was very popular amongst home users, hobbyist and small businesses, that cost about $600 US. By 1983, Model IV came out they were selling at a retail price of $2000 US! (you can go </span><a href="http://oldcomputers.net/trs80iii.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#666666;">here</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#666666;"> and </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#666666;"><a href="http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=244">here</a></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#666666;"> to read more about it)</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#666666;">Well, now we (I) know. Foundation/Base form:</div><div style="text-align: center;"> You can use <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_18">styrofoam</span> like I did, but you can make your own shape using chicken wire and tape the first few layers to create the surface for paper <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_19">mache</span>, or simply use balloons. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yuFHbCF84Oc/TfkS_Mq2m3I/AAAAAAAAAdE/3P9qjJPnX98/s200/IMG_8980edited.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618542887063427954" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 134px; text-align: center; " /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Directions</b>:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">1. <b>Cut the newspaper in strips</b>: Depending on how large your form is, you can have longer or shorter strips. I cut mine about 2" x 10" but during the covering I cut the strips shorter to do finer areas like nose and mouth.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">2. <b>Cover the head with plastic wrap</b>: Mine <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_20">didn't</span> stick to the head so easily. I'm sure it would've stuck better if the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_21">styrofoam</span> head was wet, but I didn't want any surprises with green fuzzy moulds in few months when I decide to revamp it again. Luckily the bottom of the head had a small hole (for inserting a stand) so I gathered all the loose ends of the plastic wrap and inserted it in there. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">3. "<b>Glue" solution</b>: Dissolve flour in water. I used 1 cup of flour with 2 cups of warm water. I actually added 1/3 cup of HOT water so that it would dissolve faster (got impatient). This mix was enough for 2 <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_22">styrofoam</span> heads that I planned to cover. 1 part flour to 2 part water should generally work well.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">4. <b>Dip your newspaper</b> into the mix and run the strip between your index and middle finger (the fingers you use to say "PEACE"... or "VICTORY"), gently, to get rid of excess "glue" off the strips. If you start to see your strips getting pulpy, you might want to add more flour to make your glue less runny. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">5. <b>Cover</b>: I did 2 layers, 30 min drying time in between each layer. The last layer was just newspaper strips without the glue because I noticed that there was excess amount of glue on the surface. If you did not want to paint on it and wanted to use prettier paper to cover the form, I think this would be the stage to do so. Either skip out on the glue if there's excess on the form already, or just put glue on one side of your pretty paper. You can always adjust the thickness of the covering... do more layers if you're not going to have a support inside your paper <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_23">mache</span>... do less if you're doing it for the sake of covering an object.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1Q0-g7YfIwo/TfkS_oN25qI/AAAAAAAAAdM/THAA9HkqviE/s1600/IMG_8982edited.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1Q0-g7YfIwo/TfkS_oN25qI/AAAAAAAAAdM/THAA9HkqviE/s200/IMG_8982edited.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618542894458005154" style="text-align: center; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 134px; height: 200px; " /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">6. <b>Let it dry</b>: I let it sit on a clean sheet of newspaper in my living room for about 30 hours, but I anything between 20-24 hr should be good enough.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qibvaMPPF_g/Tfkex75qtRI/AAAAAAAAAdc/6M6w1VDTpuc/s200/IMG_8988edited.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618555853363393810" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 134px; " /></span></div><div style="text-align: center; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "></span></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">7. <b>Paint!!</b>: I used <a href="http://www.krylon.com/ca/eng/products/indooroutdoor_paint"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_24">Krylon</span> Indoor/Outdoor Spray Paint</a> in Satin Pistachio. I used it because I bought it on sale a few months ago and I've been dying to use it on something. Also it was the only spray paint I had in my house and I wanted this to be budget friendly :)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I took the 2 <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_25">styrofoam</span> head forms outside and sprayed lightly. I used a few sheets of newspaper to cover the area. This spray paint dries to touch in 10 minutes and after 1 hr it's dry to handle. I did 3 coats, and left it to dry outside for 10 minutes in between. After the last coat I left them outside for a few hrs. Even though it was dry after 1 hr, I really didn't like the smell... so I left it out to air out a bit. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: center; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T4r7pzIvNhU/Tfkey8FzyNI/AAAAAAAAAds/acyb8iF9RGg/s200/IMG_8995edited.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618555870594189522" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 144px; " /></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: center; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1udyhoGZ6cE/TfkeyZvqfSI/AAAAAAAAAdk/IuJt71qw62s/s200/IMG_8993edited.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618555861374500130" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 134px; " /></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>FINISHED!!! </b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><br /></b></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-no-Ql3WfVpA/TfkezBB3xHI/AAAAAAAAAd0/nWdQygD6U9M/s200/IMG_8996edited.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618555871919850610" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 138px; " /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: center; "><br /></div><div style="text-align: center; ">showing off some new <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_26">LBT</span> products you'll see tomorrow at <a href="http://divagirlfitness.com/featured-events/divas-in-the-city-2">Divas in the City 2</a>!</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZBIq7XRshxY/Tfkojc8239I/AAAAAAAAAek/xOLi7l4eMcQ/s1600/IMG_8999edited.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZBIq7XRshxY/Tfkojc8239I/AAAAAAAAAek/xOLi7l4eMcQ/s320/IMG_8999edited.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618566599653384146" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 320px; " /></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iJwL-dCx_-Y/TfkojBE7JjI/AAAAAAAAAec/OGushi-qBNs/s1600/IMG_9004edited.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iJwL-dCx_-Y/TfkojBE7JjI/AAAAAAAAAec/OGushi-qBNs/s320/IMG_9004edited.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618566592171025970" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 307px; height: 320px; " /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I used tulle to wrap the head because the they looked a bit too plain. She studied history of Architecture and Economics, while she modelled to pay for her tuition. (She was indeed very tall, and for a lady who's turning 70 this year, she looked GREAT!) She got married at a young age, and worked as a stockbroker for a few years. While she was working, she was commissioned by a friend to cater and plan a wedding and she did that, and she did really well. Her reputation grew and she did more catering and taught her daughter's friends how to cook and bake. She then left the Wall Street and focused on her passion, which led to her current craft empire with over 90 publications. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jJMnJ1cpHgI/TfEfrBTb5lI/AAAAAAAAAb0/D1OiN98RgB4/s320/IMG_7980.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5616305034252510802" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 234px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Her entire talk was very interesting and entertaining, but here's a few that stuck to my mind.. in a nutshell.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">*She published her </span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Martha-Stewarts-Quick-Cook-Stewart/dp/0517589524"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">first book</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> when she was 40.
